Chris started judo at the aged of 17 at The Dean Judo Club in Newport, South Wales under the coaching of Sensei Doris Dean Sandan. Chris has been a qualified teacher since 1995, having obtained his B.Ed (Hons) at Manchester Metroplitan University.  He has now taught for over 20 years in schools and has been coaching Judo for 25 years.

In addition to competing in Judo tournaments, Chris has also competed in various Groundfighting tournaments and was a member of the 2000 Great Britain Sport Jujitsu Squad at the World Championships.  He has also competed in a number of No-Gi grappling tournaments, MMA and Submission Wrestling events (in his younger days).

In addition to being the Head Coach at Crewe Judo Club, he has also coached Ysgol Eirias Judo Club since 2009 and also Keele University Judo Club since 2014.  Chris also runs self-defence classes within the school in which he teaches, ensuring that all Year 13's leave school having taken a 6 week course in basic self defence.

Chris was an active member of the 3rd Battalion The Cheshire Regiment for 12 years and spent some time in Former Yugoslavia in 1994 as part of IFOR.  He has also carried out UN training in Cyprus and worked for 12 years as a Door Supervisor working the doors of Crewe, Nantwich and Stoke and has also worked as match security for Stoke City Football Club.
