JUDO TRAINING GAMES

Here are some of the games/drills which we play in our Junior sessions.

Warm-up Drills/Games

Dodgeball Students start at 1 edge of the mat, with 1 person in the middle with a soft foam ball.  On 'Hajime' students run to the opposite edge of the mat, avoiding the ball which is thrown by the person in the middle.  If someone is caught they are out and must go to the side of the mat to do solo uchikomi drills.  Last person caught is the winner.
Crawling Snakes Students line up in groups of 5 or 6 behind each other about arms width apart.  Starting with the back person, they crawl through the legs of all the people in front of them until they reach the front of the line, then the next person goes until the line reaches the opposite side of the mat.

Variation - Students can slide through the legs on their backs or each person can zig zag through the line until they reach the other side

Jockeys Up Students partner up and one stands behind the other to make a big circle on the mat.  Students start in a piggyback position.  On 'Hajime; Judoka jumps down and crawls through the legs of their partner and then run clockwise around the outside of the circle until they reach their partner again. Finish position is piggyback or hands on partners shoulders depending on ability/age
Rats and Rabbits Judoka sit in centre of mat in two lines back to back with a partner.  One side is called rats and the other is rabbits.  Coach calls either rats or rabbits, whichever one is called they have to crawl to their side of the mat and their partner has to stop them.
Up and under Working in pairs, judoka has to crawl through their partners legs from the front and then leapfrog over them and keep repeating until coach calls for them to change over.  This can be used as a drill by adding a throw after they have done the leapfrog, eg O uchi Gari
Zoo Dodgey One person is 'It' and has to throw a soft foam ball to try to hit the Judoka.  First time someone is hit with ball, they have to walk like monkey swinging their arms. If they are hit again they must crawl on hands and knees like a tiger/lion, if they are hit a third time they must crawl on their belly like a snake, Hit a 4th time they are out.  I usually bring in an extra ball or two so that the judoka who are out can have a go at getting some students out. Also it is very tiring for one person throwing the ball for whole game.
